Athens (Reuters) – Two Greek nationals were killed and two others seriously injured on Monday in an incident involving Ukrainian soldiers near the contact line between rebels and government forces in eastern Ukraine, the Greek foreign ministry said. The Greek foreign ministry said in a statement that three Ukrainian government soldiers were “responsible” for the deaths and injuries of the four Greeks, Reuters reported. The statement said the violence broke out after an argument between the Greeks and Ukrainian soldiers “for irrelevant reasons” in the village of Hranitne, near the contact line in Donetsk prefecture. It did not say what the Greeks were doing in the area, but a Greek foreign ministry official said the incident had nothing to do with the local conflict in Ukraine. The Greek foreign ministry statement also said that Nikos Dendias, the country’s foreign minister, had tried to speak to his Ukrainian counterpart about the incident and stressed that Greek expatriates in Ukraine should be protected.Thousands of Greek citizens are living in Ukraine, According to Reuters.Earlier, the Greek government had issued a warning urging its citizens to avoid traveling to Ukraine and calling on Greeks there to leave “immediately” because of fears that Russia could soon invade, Reuters said.Ukrainian authorities did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. In April 2014, the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine (including Donetsk and Luhansk prefectures) broke out in a large-scale conflict between Ukrainian government forces and civilian armed forces.Through the mediation of the international community, the parties to the conflict reached ceasefire agreements in Minsk in September 2014 and February 2015 respectively, defining the cease-fire line.Since then, large-scale armed clashes have been brought under control, but skirmishes still occur.(Edit: LH)
